Deepen Your Friendships

Most likely, your friendship-building system doesn’t involve a whole lot of planning, or even conscious awareness. Which works fine when you’re still young and in your school years. Later on, maybe not so much!

When you’re in school, there are always lots of people around—in a class, on the football team, in a club. In addition, though you may not have been consciously aware of it, you probably benefited as a child from the hard work of your parents or teachers, who made sure that you had chances to meet new friends. (The average three-year-old doesn’t plan a “play date” so that they can meet other kids!)

As we get older, the natural opportunities that children have to develop friendships start to disappear. Once you leave high school or college, your well-stocked friendship pond may have evaporated. One day you realize that you aren’t meeting new people in the same life situation anymore. At that point, your social life may start to shrink as your old friends move to other states, get married, or aren’t free on Saturday nights. It’s never too early to develop the active skills of going out and rounding up your own friends!
